What’s more exciting? Cheering your favorites at the U.S. Open in New York? Or celebrating your own U.S. Open in Alto? With Alto Lakes Tennis Association (ALTA), you can do both!
On Saturday, September 9, nearly twenty ALTA players came out en force at the Outlaw Courts, keen to emulate their favorites in New York.
Remember the enthusiasm of that evening’s women’s final that saw American teenager Coco Gauff take down the veteran Aryna Sabalenka? That match was one to remember. Not to be outdone, ALTA players matched that enthusiasm in fun competition, making ALTA’s final summer Grand Slam event also one to remember.
Generous ALTA members raised $1871 for Food4Kids at the event. Belinda Campbell, ALTA Director and Food4Kids volunteer, stated that the program delivers nutritious food on weekends when school meals are unavailable.
Just as Women’s champion Coco Gauff and Men’s champion Novak Djokovic hoisted their trophies, ALTA’s own Melissa Kriegel hoisted her door prize, a brand-new Wilson tennis racquet and cover! Congrats, Melissa!
Unlike the finalists in New York, our ALTA players refreshed with New York-inspired “noshes” (New York-ese for “ nibbles”) and sipped our own variation on the Honey Deuce, the US Open’s official raspberry-lemonade-vodka beverage. ALTA’s version was cranberry-raspberry juice, champagne and a melon ball to represent the tennis ball. It was the perfect Grand Slam salute to a perfect Grand Slam season, everyone agreed, lavishly praising organizers Elaine Wedgeworth, Belinda Campbell, Melissa Kriegel, and Molly Rogers.
Coinciding with the French Open in May/June, Wimbledon in June/July and the US Open in August/September, ALTA’s three Grand Slam events form the apex of ALTA socializing every summer.
“We don’t usually do an Australian Open in January because Alto’s weather isn’t like Sydney’s,” verified an ALTA organizer. “But we make up for it in the summer!” chimed in another. So if you missed this summer’s ALTA Grand Slammers, plan on joining us next summer.
But, wait, there’s more! Members eagerly anticipate ALTA’s next social, our annual Crazy Christmas mixer to be held Saturday, December 2nd.
In the meantime Alto tennis continues all year long.
TWICE THE TENNIS FUN!
Yes, tennis players, in addition to Outlaw's two courts, we may now play on Kokopelli's two courts! Four courts for fall fun! October’s crisp, cool mornings and perfect afternoons provide perfect tennis weather, with organized play on Fridays. “I just love playing tennis in the fall at Outlaw,” affirms an ALTA player. “Cooler temps, no wind–makes me want to play all day, every day.”
